It gets good reception with the stock antenna, but I hooked it up to my j-pole that I have optimized for GMRS/UHF ham.

Antenna connector inside unit is loose or broken, no reception

If you don't live in an urban setting, I recommend connecting an external antenna, as this will provide much better reception than the plug-in antenna included with the scanner.
