In a last ditch attempt to resolve my issues I simply bought a new micro-SD card and everything works now

Add a monitor, keyboard and raspbian on a micro sd card and your good to start designing circuits and hardaware/software applications.

I wish it included a small micro SD card as well to make it ready out of the box for people new to the Pi Zeno
