It seems like if WD knows these are mostly going into Tivos that they would make sure that setup would be trouble free.

Regardless of how it was setup and who helped set it up this product never worked with the Fios DVR from Verizon.

Setup was awkward for a little while because I had initially pre-loaded some video files onto the hard drive before installation, thinking I would be able to play them on my Tivo, but apparently that's not allowed

the genies will "see" the full 4 TB worth of space (note that the genie 2 comes with 2 TB worth of hard drive space just "by itself" which might be enough for your family's use anyways, you know best how much recording space your family needs :) ) ... at which point I'll transfer this anker/seagate hard drive setup to the genie.. in the meantime the anker/seagate hard drive combo worked flawlessly with my HR-24, didn't even need to "format" itself like the WD expander, just started working immediately and is still working great one week later

I then looked for the best price as well as S&H.After reading many reviews here & elsewhere regarding frequent failure of the included SATA cable, I installed the hard drive

After reading about problems on this unit due to bad E-SATA cables being supplied by WD, I bought another brand from AMAZON, and that fixed the problem

Others have had problems with e sata cable but mine worked fine.

The E-Sata cable works without issue

I then rechecked everything again and discovered an ID10T error (Idiot error from my time working on a help desk)
