• Reviews around build (3.82 of 5)

Zoom H4N PRO Digital Multitrack Recorder

    • The built-in condensor mics are quite sensitive and have a good response
    • The built-in speaker is really handy
    • The built in stereo microphones collect surrounding noise beautifully and amazed me the with how much they pick up
    • The built-in mics are far better than I expected
    • Thirdly, as mentioned in other reviews, the built-in mics are not the quietest and do tend to exacerbate sibilance in my experience
    • The Zoom Q3 video recorder strikes me as the best built of the bunch, as it's solid metal practically through and through, and the limited settings make it easier to use than either the H1 or H2.
    • I have found that the built-in mics quality is good enough only for recording the practice sessions
    • The only other thing is that the power cord could be a bit longer, and it sometimes produces a high-pitched tone that fortunately the sensitive built-in microphones do not pick up
    • It's solid, well built and well engineered.
    • For this type of session, I use the built-in stereo mics to capture un-mic'd sounds from the stage (drums, tambourine, misc noises from the props from on stage) as well as the sound of the auditorium
    • The built-in mics are actually half decent, but to my ear they suffer from the same strange EQ issue as the headphone
    • A tripod mount makes for a solid mount keeping it aimed in the direction you want, again use a qualliy tripod with shock proof feet to avoid unwanted noise transfer, the built in mic will pick up any and all noises so test it out before going on a job, this avoids issues later
    • The built-in condenser mics are great, and the built in effects are equally useful, especially for adjusting audio for doing voiceover work or spoken word, like podcasts
    • Having multiple inputs for external microphones as well as built in microphones was just what I needed.
    • The Zoom H4n is a well built full featured portable digital recorder
    • It works great and even the built in mics are great
    • + Phenomenal recording quality for a portable recorder+ Excellent built-in stereo microphones+ Record level adjustment buttons on the hardware, rather than just on the software+ Two combined XLR and
    • The built in mics are light years better than what comes included with most cameras and you can go a step further by attaching your own high quality mics
    • The built-in mics are actually half decent, but to my ear they suffer from the same strange EQ issue as the headphone
    • The built-in microphones went bad only days after the warranty expired
    • The built-in microphones are surprisingly good
    • Many great features such as built-in low cut filter, compressor and limiter
    • The built in mics are better, the XLR preamps are better
    • I'm just wondering why the built in mic's have no protection
    • The built in mics work great for NAT sound or interviewing someone on the spot.
    • It is solid and well built, simple to use, yet powerful.
    • The built in stereo microphones collect surrounding noise beautifully and amazed me the with how much they pick up
    • The preamps on the old H4 were too noisy to record classical guitar with external mics of any quality, but using the built in mics wasn't too bad if one ignored the background hiss.
    • It is well built, easy to hand hold or mount to a tripod
    • The built in mics are very useful, and the variety of input and recording options are great.
    • Weaknesses are the built-in speaker, the inability to handle line level recording, and slow start-up
    • It allows for the input of external microphones, but also has great built in mics too
    • The built-in microphones are worthless, but no one buying this would ever actually use them, except in emergency, so is a non-factor.
    • While built-in microphones provide sufficient sound clarity and recording at 24/96 produces sufficient frequency spectrum, the level of self-noise is simply overwhelming to me.
    • It is well built, nicely compact, and has a wealth of feature to make it a real professional tool, including built-in limiting and phantom power for external mikes.
    • This unit records pristine, clear wav files and is a super solid build.
    • The built in recorder is great, but I typically plug an external microphone to get a crisp sound.
    • The H4N Pro is the newest incarnation of the  ZOOM H4, their high-end field recorder with dual XLR mic inputs as well as excellent built-in capsule mics for major flexibility
    • It has two really decent built-in mics as well as combination jacks to plug in either ¼” mic cables or XLR.In general, it is easy to use once it is set up – determining the type of recording (stereo, 4 channel or Multi-track)
    • The built-in mics are actually pretty good.
    • The built-in microphones have also been improved and cover a wider range of audio environments
    • It is well-built with top-quality components and will last you for years if you take good care of it (it comes in a hard plastic case which you can use to transport it).You can also buy a remote control to use with this
    • If you're a film student and you're sick and tired of your camera's crappy built in microphone, this is for you
    • It is incredibly versatile in terms of its input capabilities and its built-in pre-amp allows for solid, crisp audio recording in any setting
    • The Zoom ZH4N Handy Portable Digital Recorder is a well-built, easy to operate machine which will satisfy most users who wish to make an audio recording 'in the field' where studio recording is not appropriate
    • The built-in mics are very nice, although they are very directional
    • The built in speaker is weak
    • As every other Zoom product I’ve ever owned, it is extremely well built and well designed.
    • The Zoom Q3 video recorder strikes me as the best built of the bunch, as it's solid metal practically through and through, and the limited settings make it easier to use than either the H1 or H2.
    • Even the built-in mics not only look cool, but it picks up audio really nicely
    • Third, this thing has great build quality--especially for the money.
