I've used this unit's predecessor, the R-09, for years, so I recommended the newer R-05 for a friend, and had a chance to evaluate it.
Bottom line: Could not find a better recorder at any reasonable price.
I've used the Roland R-05 for a month or so and like it a lot
While corners were cut to bring a very good recorder to be affordable at this price point, I would highly recommend the R-05 to anyone who wants a recorder that works exactly as advertised.
I used to recommend the R-09 frequently, leading to comfirmed purchases by collegues
I was lucky enough to stumble across a review that said it was the best for spoken voice, and the recordings really do sound good
This little guy is doing a great job - excellent sound, durable, a faster boot up time than my last Roland and better battery life.
Easy to use, connect to external audio sources, and great quality sound with great features.
It also gives the best sound for its price range--I listened to many, many YouTube samples comparing this recorder to others, and this recorder gives extremely clean (noise-free) sound with just the right balance between treble and bass
There are issues with the sound--there is kind of a hissing sound when I playback the recording through the recorder.
