Electronics problems, or upgrades necessary to "make it sound like a Kala" made the price of a "cheaper model" about the same... with no warrentee... because you upgraded it
Love the idea, maybe someday I'll give Kala another shot.
My Kala is Solid Spruce top and laminate back & sides

Having said that, this is one nice instrument, with the ability to offer a variety a tone options from it's “signature” upright double bass sound to a more “classic” electric bass sound
I would also like to point out that this bass projects like you would not believe
It is shipped with polyurethane strings and right out of the box, when amplified, it does give you a really nice upright bass tone
Not Like any other Bass Most People have
All in all a good bass for traveling especially when paired with a battery powered amp.
I've had a great deal of fun with this instrument already, and enjoy it enough that I may well get a second ... perhaps a fretless?
First week using it at the JEMS My Hermon Family retreat, it was hard to dial in through my Hartke HA1200 KickBack12 the Low E was weak as was the G com, pared to the A & D strings

The only negative is that the pickup isn’t working evenly across all 4 strings - the low E is definitely quieter than the rest
The instrument can be played acoustically, but doesn't put out a great deal of volume that way, though it could probably hold it's own beside a classical guitar or lute.

The workmanship is beautiful, with a very comfortable and playable neck, with good action and no fret buzz
The neck and frets are very nice, it appears to be a quality instrument

One minor disappointment for me is, apparently, this hollow body U-bass is not compatible with my Line 6 Relay wireless system
Then the Spruce top, and then the all Solid Mahogony & up from there

This peticular Spruce Top geetar just was the loudest tuneful one of the bunch including a second Solid Spruce Model which gets me to the Fretted vs Non fretted
The only negative is that the pickup isn’t working evenly across all 4 strings - the low E is definitely quieter than the rest
It has a tuner built in, really great tone and plays well.

The bass, however, did have a nice deep tone, but I could barely hear it!
As wonderful as this instrument is, it is remarkable the tone you get when you run it through a bass amp.

One negative thing that I have noticed is that the E string through the pickup is quite a bit weaker and does not sound nearly as strong as the other strings, which I have read the same observation also from other reviewers
The sound; there are so many amazing things that I could say about the sounds this little guy makes
The strings are the coolest fat rubbery things I have ever encountered
Could probably modify a few things but its not that bad.
