Reviews around size (5.00 of 5)

  • This is a decent lens that is a good pancake size to help reduce the overall camera size.
  • f/2.8 Wide-Angle Lens is an outstanding lens for Sony E Mount cameras like the NEX
  • it's compact size and ability to make the NEX F3 pocketable
  • I bought this extra lens because of the compact size, so I could carry it with me easier than the larger lens.
  • It is a nice compact size and weight, a good all around lens if you like wide angle shooting

Reviews around shot (5.00 of 5)

  • The combo makes for nice shots, the absence of zoom means you fiddle less and spend more time composing the shot
  • (I did this recently on vacation with the Sigma 30mm attached). As far as the lens is concerned, it takes nice wide shots, which can be good for landscapes and inside
  • Adapter that is sold separately to provide good landscape shots.
  • I have grabbed some AWESOME shots with the ultra wide-angle lens attached to this baby.
  • If you're looking specifically for a wide-angle lens and can take well-lit shots, consider this

Reviews around price (5.00 of 5)

  • Twice the price ain't twice as nice, in fact it's a disgusting display of corporate greed that I blame upon Amazon, Sony, Ritz, and Willoughby
  • I found a used copy of this lens at a good price, so I bought it just after I bought my
  • while this is a rather reasonably priced lens when compared to canon or nikon, it really needs the HD Wide angle
  • I just bought the newest Sony 10-20 zoom which while twice the price is twice as good.
  • If i could've found the newer 20mm f/2.8 second-hand for a great price i would have picked it up.

Reviews around value (5.00 of 5)

  • In summary, after nearly three years of shooting with the Panasonic G3, Sony RX100 (original version), and Sony NEX 5n, though Sony mirrorless is a superior camera and an excellent value, wide angle lens options are severely limited, especially on a budget
  • f/2.8 Wide-Angle Lens is an outstanding lens for Sony E Mount cameras like the NEX
  • Panasonic GM-1 + 12-32mm kit lens is a great value, and I've actually played with one in the camera shop, but I've got a Sony NEX 5n
  • Very good value and combined with VCLECU1 High Definition Wide Angle Conversion Lens, creates a lot of picture composition options.
  • I've mounted this lens and camera on a Steady Dragon stabilizer and gotten some nice results too (search NEX and SD the video sharing site that starts with "v" A great value--I plan on getting the ultra wide converter soon. :-)

Reviews around job (5.00 of 5)

  • It's not as sharp as I would like either and is also only 2.8 but does a much better job all around
  • It does a good job for the price, just don't expect it to be the same as a $1,000 lens
  • But even the in camera system does a great job fixing it.
  • Nice, thin lens for your NEX, and works really well with the ultra-wide converter (the only reason I bought it, I suppose, since the kit power-zoom does a decent job at 16mm)
  • I don't know why Sony does not do a better job of promoting them

Reviews around result (5.00 of 5)

  • I have used the lens with both my NEX-3, NEX5n and NEX-7, all with great results
  • But it does really decrease the size of the camera when it's on, and when combined with the VCL-ECU1 ultra-wide converter, the results are great
  • I've mounted this lens and camera on a Steady Dragon stabilizer and gotten some nice results too (search NEX and SD the video sharing site that starts with "v" A great value--I plan on getting the ultra wide converter soon. :-)
  • Well, after using it and pixel peeping with the RAW image files i can say that this lens produced outstanding result
  • f/2.8 Wide-Angle Lens is an outstanding lens for Sony E Mount cameras like the NEX

Reviews around angle (4.61 of 5)

  • I bought it because it is a cheap wide angle and I am using it for video so thats fine
  • This lens is a superb wide angle lens, and it arrived in like-new condition
  • He uses it all the time and it takes amazing wide angle photos.
  • A NICE WIDE ANGLE SHOT OF THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE WITH IT
  • I have the 18-55 kit lens for the Sony NEX-5 and wanted a good wide angle lens for it

Reviews around photo (4.56 of 5)

  • Otherwise you'd have to set the camera down or be prepared to have bad photos or have a tripod to have better photos.
  • Learn your camera and you will get better photos, from almost any lens, you put on the NEX 7.
  • I thought the camera was combersome and didn't take great photos, so I sold the whole system including this lens.
  • Works great as a stand alone lens or when paired with the ultra wide angle or fish eye lens to take amazing photos
  • Most people that complain about this lens, have not spent enough time learning how to set the camera properly... to get great photos

Reviews around quality (4.30 of 5)

  • Since it is compact, bright (f/2.8) and have a good glass quality it has become my everyday lens for street photos.
  • I did also contact Sony about the lens and they try troubleshooting it over the phone but the lens still did not produce good quality photos
  • This wide angle lens is very small, thin, and light weight, nut it also gives you good quality photo
  • Poor lens, poor image quality
  • The lens also take wide angle photos but they are not good quality

Reviews around camera (4.03 of 5)

  • f/2.8 Wide-Angle Lens is an outstanding lens for Sony E Mount cameras like the NEX
  • I've got to conclude the not so sharp shots are due to my shaky camera holding and inattentive focusing
  • It's not as sharp as I would like either and is also only 2.8 but does a much better job all around
  • I for one, who was going to buy an expensive Nikon camera from Amazon, will shop elsewhere
  • Sony makes great cameras, but the e mount lens selection leaves much to be desired.

Reviews around image (3.34 of 5)

  • Unfortunately, I couldn't handle the fact that it doesn't have oss or produce sharp images
  • I've had two copies of this lens and both produce consistently soft images
  • I've also found that the images don't really get sharp until about 2-3 stops down, which kills the low light capabilities I was looking for.
  • That lens is fantastically sharp, to the point that when something is out of focus it's still sharper than a "sharp" image with the Sony 16mm F2.8
  • Also image stabilization, unusual on an ultra-wide, more than offsets the one-stop smaller aperture, permitting slower shutter speeds, and is very much worth having

More about Sony SEL16F28 16mm f/2.8 Wide-Angle Lens for NEX Series Cameras

  • Product description Stylishly designed to match a NEX cameras, the SEL16F28 is an exceptionally portable and versatile lens that's perfect for both photos and video
  • This bright lens (16mm focal length, f/2.8 maximum aperture) offers a big, 24mm (35mm equivalent) wide angle and 83° field of view for outstanding low-light performance, and smooth, quiet AF (Auto Focus) operation. From the Manufacturer E 16mm F2.8 Wide Angle Lens Landscapes, architecture, snapshots … this 24 mm equivalent (35mm full frame format) E-mount prime lens can cover them all
  • Compact and extremely lightweight, this lens will always be ready for action without being a burden to carry
  • While a refined aluminum alloy exterior gives the lens a sophisticated feel, a motor on the inside delivers smooth, quiet autofocus and aperture operation that contributes to high-quality movies as well as stills
  • Technology Circular Aperture When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the light sources appear blurred
  • This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background can be enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens
  • Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing polygonal shaped defocussed points of light
  • α lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops
  • Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result
  • Aspherical lens elements Aspherical lens design dramatically reduces spherical aberration while also reducing lens size and weight
  • Spherical aberration is a slight misalignment of the light rays projected on the image plane
  • This is caused by differences in refraction at different points on conventional spherical lenses which degrade image quality in large-aperture lenses
  • Specially shaped “aspherical” elements near the diaphragm restore alignment of light rays at the image plane, maintaining high sharpness and contrast even at maximum aperture and can also be used at other points in the optical path to reduce distortion
  • Well-designed aspherical elements can reduce the total number of elements required in the lens, thus reducing overall size and weight
  • Advanced Aspherical (AA) elements are an evolved variant, featuring an extremely high thickness ratio between the center and periphery
  • AA elements are exceedingly difficult to produce, relying on the most advanced molding technology to consistently and precisely achieve the required shape and surface accuracy, resulting in significantly improved image accuracy and quality
  • Distance encoder The distance encoder plays an integral part in ADI flash metering, which delivers high precision flash metering that is unaffected by the reflectance of subjects or backgrounds
  • The distance encoder is a lens component that directly detects the position of the focusing mechanism, and sends a signal to the CPU in order to measure distance to the subject
  • During flash photography, this data is very useful in calculating how much flash output is appropriate to the scene
  • Additional Features Internal focusing Only the middle groups of the optical system move to achieve focus, so the overall length of the lens does not change
  • Other important benefits include fast autofocusing and a short minimum focusing distance
  • Also, the filter thread at the front of the lens does not rotate, which is convenient if you’re using a polarizing filter
