Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver - 2024 report by Whydis
Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver
If you're a bass player, then there are four words that constitute the bane of your existence - "just run it direct." Seriously, how many time have you heard those words and just wanted to deck the sound guy, or the front man, or the drummer (hey, he...
This is a great DI box for live performance and recording.
Once again, great DI with good pre but ONLY if you like the SVT vibe
This is a quiet DI, but presence and drive heavily accentuate any other noise in your rig, so be aware of that.
While this unit works great at all volume levels, one thing I'd like to point out is that for bass players practicing at lower volumes at home, this DI allows you to dial up a fat, inspiring tone that makes you enjoy practicing way more, without having to crank your volume before you can sound good.
Judicious use of the blend knob makes up for the lack of a midrange control
I went ahead and bought one from someone through Craigslist for a way better price (used of course) and when I heard my bass play through this thing, it was so heartwarming
I get pretty good use from one 9v battery, but mostly use the power supply I purchased for it
After finally deciding to buy one of my own I can assure you that almost anyone can dial in an amazing bass tone using this

It has a parallel out which is great for monitoring in a live situation, and it also has an XLR output which will convert an unbalanced signal to a balanced XLR signal (this means a nice clean signal that can travel long distances without introducing line noise and such)
The eq controls are very good and the signal is clean, although the drive control can provide plenty of grit if you want it.

It’s great for getting that iconic SVT tone, but you can also turn the blend all the way down and use it as an active EQ (which is great for my passive P Bass)
This has been the best piece of equipment I have purchased for my professional bass playing career.
Its Sansamp, The name you know and love, nothing really needs to be said, its an amazing piece of hardware.
and I find out that a lot of people find this BDDI to be a favorable piece of gear in their bass signal chain
I have had my SansAmp Bass Driver DI for nearly 10 years, and it is the single best piece of equipment you can buy for your bass rig on a limited budget.

Like any decent preamp, the SansAmp expands and refines the soundof the electric bass, whether in the studio or playing live
It comes with a nice decorative tin to keep your SansAmp protected.

The sansamp is also a great boost for passive basses and gives them power without distorting the sound

When we tested the device for the first time, it sounded like a cheap distortion pedal operating with a weak battery
Its has a great distortion and sustain, but its got a compressor circuit and you cant adjust it or turn it off, when I tried to pound a high note the attack and volume gets squashed/neutered
Although, this pedal does offer my favorite distortion sound for electric bass.
With the exception of maybe a nice distortion or overdrive pedal, I don't see the need for much else in your rig besides this.

No matter that your amp has an awesome tube preamp built in.

You can create a surprising array of tones with this pedal, but it will always have a tube/SVT quality, which for me is an awesome, but tone is a very personal thing so it will not work for all bass guitarists

It can do great things even for an inexpensive bass, and sounds fantastic with my Warwick and Fender American Jazz basses.
The only thing I can really think of is that this might not work for you if you’re not into SVT or tube style tones
For me one of the most difficult things to achieve in a home recording situation (especially in an apartment) is getting a great bass guitar sound
If you're a bass player, then there are four words that constitute the bane of your existence - "just run it direct." Seriously, how many time have you heard those words and just wanted to deck the sound guy, or the front man, or the drummer (hey, he probably had nothing to do with it, but, well, he's still a drummer)
Cry, scream, shout, you're still going to end up running direct
With a Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI, however, you can run direct on your own terms
That's right, no more soulless, totally flat bass for you!
