Boss DR-880 Dr. Rhythm Drum Machine - 2024 report by Whydis
Boss DR-880 Dr. Rhythm Drum Machine
You think you have rhythm, yeah? Maybe you've got a degree in rhythm, but you certainly don't have a doctorate... our friend here DR-880 Dr. Rhythm, however, definitely does. This little beast is loaded with 440 drum and percussion sounds and 40 bass...
I think, they need to listen to live acts like Dio, Van Halen, Savatage, Iron Maiden to hear what a great kit sounds like
There are 2 useful kits, you can edit some drums to make useful kits but it's painstaking
I program midi drum tracks into my sequencer (or use existing midi track samples that are getting easier to find these days) and use the DR-880 for its wealth of top-notch drum kits and percussion hits.
In my opinion nothing beats the Roland drum sounds and there are so many kits available

They also included a fairly decent multi-effects unit
You can create your own tracks or edit the installed ones as well as add effects.
The amp simulators in there are passable at best for recording or live performance but they are plenty good enough to jam along to the drum beats on and the included effects are fun to mess around

A little long in the tooth but has quite a few good sounding options
Regardless of that, it is quite powerful, with quite a few good sounding guitar amp options on tap
There are drum humanize options that are quite robust, as well as some swing options and these can be dialed per beat, lending a more realistic performance

If you don't want to be bothered to program fills you can use some of the preset fills, a feature that is a real time saver
I do feel though, that for the price, it is not unfair to expect a more full featured jambox w/ better sequencing capabilities and sounds to use as a stand alone unit.
Feature rich, showy and flashy, but I would have read the 100 some odd pages in the manual and tweak the sounds for recording
One nice feature is you can rout the bass (or anything) to a separate output so you can run the bass sounds to an actual bass amp and the drums to the PA and get a more realistic live sound that way
This is a slightly older machine from BOSS, but is still holding its value very well as it's really a great drum machine with great features
They are of the quality where they will sometimes sound a bit funny when recording demos if you don't spend enough time getting your guitars and such to sound as good as the drums
As long as I am paying attention, I can play it live like a drummer with flawless timing
You can do any manner of odd time signature or tempo

but the machine has enough to cover most of rock, metal, ballad, R&B and blues, even some hip hop
Enjoying this product, somewhat limited but still a great drum machine
The DVD really is a must buy because the DR-880 is fairly complex machine and it's not very intuitive to use
The DR-880 can implement tempo changes per patch, so logically it was the only way to go for more complex arrangement, unless you are one of the people that like to slave a drum machine to a DAW or hardware sequencer
This item, is undoubtedly one of the more excellent drum machines available; and for a price cut of nearly 60 percent, you really can't turn something like this down
