Roland makes good products so the higher price should give you some piece of mind that you will be getting a better product.
Start installing the software BEFORE you connect it as the software will prompt you when to actually plug in the USB connector.

The Roland UM-ONE had no problem connecting my midi device to my computer and everything worked as advertised.
Unfortunately, Roland doesn't make it easy at all to find it on their website's product page either

The cheaper USB midi interfaces often don't properly send SYSEX messages to properly set up and control those older sound modules and synthesizers.
I purchased a cheaper midi to usb cable & it wouldn't work for my device.
Make sure you plug in the right midi plug (it is labeled) to your device.
