I had a cable just like the one that comes with already connected to my stereo receiver and it was causing a lot of static noise

I had to really crank up my volume to get it sound ok, but even at loud volume it was noisy.

The other serious annoyance is the loud beeping noises it makes when any device connects or disconnects

The beeping is tolerable.

Some people have complained about loud beeping when devices connect or disconnect.

But when I connected it to my older Pioneer amp using the mini-jack to RCA jacks cord, it gave me a very loud 60 Hz hum.

When I switched to the RCA connections there was a loud hum like an ungrounded turntable
