Reviews around look (5.00 of 5)

  • In short, Great if you want that classic sound and vintage look
  • Very standard classic look, but the yellow coating on the wood is unattractive
  • The polished metal and wood look is absolutely gorgeous, and I would consider my Special 20 more of a "beater" than this
  • I also prefer the overall look of the Marine Band over the Special 20
  • The wood and metal build sounds as beautiful as it looks

Reviews around product (4.72 of 5)

  • If you want to learn harmonica and enjoy it, then I can recommend this product
  • Great product with terrific quality and sound with less effort that a cheaper made item
  • I slightly prefer the sound and playability of the Special 20 and would therefore recommend the Special 20 (C), though I would recommend the Marine Band (A) as a second harmonica
  • The #2 (E) doesn't work, and the #1 (C) and #3 (G) are spotty, so no first C chord.
  • what more can you ask for in a great product for a hobby

  • The #2 (E) doesn't work, and the #1 (C) and #3 (G) are spotty, so no first C chord.
  • That being said, great beginner harmonica at an affordable price point
  • The advantage of the Marine Band is that it looks good and sounds good at a reasonable price
  • Tone is very nice, all notes sound perfect and came at a great price.

Reviews around comb (4.59 of 5)

  • My favorite thing about this harmonica is the classic wooden comb, giving it a much more rich, folky, Bob Dylan-esque tone (which is what I was going for)
  • My favorite Plastic Comb Harmonica, and outstanding in terms of comfort and ease of play
  • My favorite thing about this harmonica is the classic wooden comb, giving it a much more rich, folky, Bob Dylan-esque tone (which is what I was going for)
  • This is a good harmonica expecialy if you like a wood comb
  • If you are a beginner I strongly recommend the Hohner Special 20 (plastic comb) for its ease of play

  • Just starting and learning how to play and this harp sounds great and I'm just a beginner
  • I love this Harp, hard to beat it, but then it's a Hohner, what more can one say

Reviews around thing (3.95 of 5)

  • This thing is so sharp, I am afraid to take it out of the case sometimes
  • My favorite thing about this harmonica is the classic wooden comb, giving it a much more rich, folky, Bob Dylan-esque tone (which is what I was going for)

  • I would not get another Marine Band harp until Hohner smooths things out.
  • I then ordered a Blues Harp Minor G for $15.98, it's a great harmonica but also was sent the wrong key (Major G)

Reviews around band (3.71 of 5)

  • I later bought other, more sophisticated harmonicas but my Marine Band will always be my favorite!
  • The Marine Band is a lot sharper on the notes and a lot easier to sound good on.
  • Plus, if I did get any better the Marine Band would still be good enough at an advanced level
  • The Marine Band is not the worst I have experienced, but the coverplates do stick out over the wood comb slightly
  • I have been playing a Marine Band Harmonica (favorite keys - C and D) for over 40 years

Reviews around edge (3.56 of 5)

  • The 2 brass plates that are sandwiched between the chrome outer plates both had a very pronounced sharp edge that I had to file down to keep from cutting my lips.
  • I then ordered a Blues Harp Minor G for $15.98, it's a great harmonica but also was sent the wrong key (Major G)
  • The sound of the Marine Band is good but the brass reed plates are exposed on the front of the instrument and have a sharp enough edge to cut you if you are not careful.
  • Had to burnish the sharp edges, which was not easy, since this model is held together with nails instead of screws, and is almost impossible for a lay-person to disassemble easily
  • Once I relieved all of the (MANY) sharp edges and corners, it played very well, and sounds great

Reviews around hole (1.80 of 5)

  • Tip for beginners from a beginner: Some people may complain that a few holes don't work, like the 2 or 7
  • Covering up all the holes and blowing on #2, I get sound.
  • I hear that sometimes some holes can sound a little strange on a new harmonica until you "break it
  • " (10-hole major diatonic) though it will wail some interesting blues.

Reviews around draw (1.69 of 5)

  • Actually, neither I nor my wife could get good sound out of 2 draw or 3 draw, but evidently 2 draw is a common problem for novices.
  • but I was quite surprised to find that the 3 draw, which I've never had a problem with, was very stiff and requires a lot of wind to pull out
  • Her harmonica teacher confirmed that 3 draw wasn't working

More about Hohner 1896 Marine Band Natural Minor Harmonica D

  • Color:D A historic harmonica in natural minor tuning that's ideal for playing in minor keys and genres like minor blues, rock, country, reggae, pop, and jazz
  • As expert harp player Steve Baker describes in his book, The Harp Handbook, the Marine Band harmonica in Natural Minor tuning means that "all the 3rds in the blow and draw chords...are tuned a semitone lower than the Richter system, so that both blow and draw chords are minor...." This "tuning is great for blues and rock numbers in minor keys..." and is "also very good for minor key reggae numbers, or similar spacey groove music...." In general, natural minor harps have a very bluesy, soulful sound that's perfect for playing minor blues, rock, country, reggae, pop, and jazz
  • This fabulous tuning is set up to play minor music easily without straining the lips, the lungs, or the mind! All of the notes and chords that were missing on the major diatonic harps for playing minor blues are right there on the natural minor
  • Natural minors are designed to be played in cross harp (draw), not straight harp (blow) style
  • In cross harp, many of the draw notes can be bent, allowing for a much more expressive, fluid style of playing
  • In addition, cross harp is a very popular style used by most players for today's music
  • The natural minor-tuned Hohner 1896 Marine Band Harmonica follows in the footsteps of harps played by world-famous musicians like John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, Little Walter, and Paul Butterfield
  • The Hohner Marine Band is a number-one choice among top professionals and one of the most recognizable harmonicas all over the world
  • Known for its full tone, wood comb, and its patented cover plates, the Marine Band harmonica was there when harmonica blues was born
  • The Marine Band harp is a results of over 100 years of Hohner tradition and German craftsmanship
