Sound is accurate with no discernable distortion and sweet with no shrillness
I had the pre-amp volume set at roughly "3.5", and the sound was brilliant, clear, and on the verge of being uncomfortably loud
After the disc is inserted it makes loud sounds while trying to read, intermittently it fails to recognize discs, skips music within tracks
So if you like the 1541A chip sound, you'll appreciate this Marantz 6006.
In my opinion it is the best CD player in it's price range.
I had purchased a decent CD player at the same time as the other equipment, but it gave up the ghost, and was replaced with an inferior changer from Sony as a stopgap
So what do I have to show for ordering this wonderful new CD player with all the positive reviews

CD-R's are no problem.
Clarity, soundstage, and separation of the instruments are all outstanding on this player.
An awful lot of unpaid labor because Marantz has no respect for its customers and ships them equipment which works for an hour and then kaput
Quality control is possible, but maybe the Marantz company has just been sold too many times and has lost its identity and the pride Saul Marantz instilled in it in New York all those years ago.(I have since bought the Yamaha CD-S700 for my living room setup
CD-R's are no problem.
So if you like the 1541A chip sound, you'll appreciate this Marantz 6006.
Just recieved the Marantz CD6006 a few days ago, and so far it's great
The quality of the sound is great until it abruptly skips
Note, I initially planned to run the Marantz CD player through my NAD M51 DAC, but after running the optical through the DAC & straight to the pre-amp, the sound quality was simply too disappointing; the truly great part is when I simply ran the CD player's built in DAC

Background: a 25 year old high end system with Thiel speakers, Threshold electronics, Sota vacuum turntable with SME Series V arm and Monster Genesis cartridge that works with my 85 year old, still golden ears
I should add that I've been playing drums, on and off, for almost half a century, and only in the past five or so years have I protected my ears properly

The oversized power supply feeds the digital and analogue circuitry of the player, where the high-quality CS4398 DAC converts digital signals to analogue, this is then 'pushed' to the gold-plated synch outputs by Marantz's own small signal amplifier, the HDAM-SA2
In addition, we have included a new remote that also controls the PM6006 amp
Altogether, the CD6006 is a match made in heaven for the music lover who wants nothing but the best performance at an attractive price, and it is also perfect for lovers of portable music, thanks to its iPod-digital connectivity
One more thing: the CD6006 features a newly developed, complex headphone amplifier with Headphone amp gain setting for a wider range of headphones.
