But, keep in mind that Harman Kardan's competing playbar is priced generally the same ($600 range), and this one comes equipped with Sonos' best in-class digital music software built in, Sonos Connect, which gives you access to your library of digital music (Amazon Cloud Player, Spotify, Pandora, and Rhapsody) through a simple interface
It isn't updated often, feels old and unintuitive and has limited music options
music on this thing sounds great, as it does with all sonos products
Surrounds (Play 3s) will go down in volume when in TV mode, but music sounds extremely well and non-distorted.
I did like the sound enough (Music and TV) to purchase the SONOS Sub.
The sound bar is expensive but what I will remember is the ease of set up and the great sound.
Rich room-filling sound that blows away our older vizio bar.
I decided to buy the Playbar with another Sub, because I knew it would be exactly what I needed to upgrade a mediocre Vizio sound bar I had prior to this
I am so impressed I can go on and on about this outstanding sound bar
Sounds great, but you can get a great sounding sound bar from a couple manufacturers.
Love the Sonos system, they are a bit expensive but the sound quality is amazing.
Just not what many want from an expensive TV sound system
I should have known that Sonos would change the game, as this soundbar CRUSHED my old system in terms of both setup and sound.
But if you hope to get a great surround sound system when you couple it with two more Sonos Play:1 or Play:3 speakers, you will very likely be disappointed
We had been looking for a sound system that was comparable to our old, but very bulky home entertainment system
Of course, there’s also the Sonos ecosystem problems, but if you’re looking at this speaker you’re probably already familiar with those limitations (e.g. no Bluetooth, no line-in, no audible support, slow app updates, etc.).
The app only works on the same WiFi network as the Playbar
The app to play music is great and give you a lot of options.
The app is nice and playing over your network is nice, but you have to play your music from the SONOS app itself
To use the TV remote to control channels, then a separate app to control the sound volume is just ridiculous
Expensive and only works with fiber digital connection to tv.
So, for those of you reading all of the reviews and wondering if you need a really expensive TV to get true Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound with the Sonos home theater setup, the answer is no
I did like the sound enough (Music and TV) to purchase the SONOS Sub.
Do not buy this Sonos PlayBar if you own a modern Samsung TV.
I now have fantastic sound from my Samsung smart TV and I can play music from my GS4 phone or Slacker (and others) any time I want
Other than the excellent sound, the best thing is that my wife knows how to use it
Depending on the source, and the material, and the streaming service, and the audio switch I was trying at the time- things would work great, and then not at all, or sound terrible with one thing, and great with everything else
Follow up: Now that I have owned this for awhile, I can still say this thing is great
This thing is rather overpriced for what you are getting.
I can understand why SONOS chose this single-input approach - if there were an "input" function on the PlayBar to switch inputs, chances are things could have gotten confusing for some users
As for sound quality, the speakers that are part of my TV are better for watching TV and movies, but the SoundBar is better for music.
While these speakers are expensive, one should remember that you are actually buying both an amplifier and speaker system all in one (two with the subwoofer) package
Its just that good.- set up was fairly easy.- being able to sync with your tv remote is just a great feature to have- once combined with a pair of sonos 3 as surround speakers you have yourself a great speaker system perfect for a bedroom or mini tv room
Before buying, be sure your TV has an option in a menu somewhere to disable the internal speakers.
My goal in adding Playbar was to disable the existing room speakers, and use the Playbar as the audio source
*****Sonos has finally decided to NOT support DTS which is really disappointing to me
Sonos sent me a second playbar and it failed to connect - so both had to be returned
I've always wanted a Sonos because I like the concept of simplifying the Home Audio system.
and I can use it for TV speakers as well as regular Sonos player
I love the Sonos for the concept, but it lacks DTS support which you will definitely run into if you will be doing any streaming of content that only has a DTS audio track.
It's great to be able to send my 40 or so digital music channels from my cable provider throughout the house as well as to finally have my DVD player connected
Overall, I love the playbar, and the minor limitations are easily overlooked given the superior music streaming capabilities that Sonos offers along with excellent sound quality.
Email and web support not easy and vague and phone support is only open M-F bankers hours with extremely long hold
Sonos is legendary for a good reason - because they really produce these components for the discerning consumer as well as for the neophyte looking for new sonic frontiers
Email and web support not easy and vague and phone support is only open M-F bankers hours with extremely long hold
For this reason, I would have liked to see a second digital input on the PlayBar as well as DTS decoding
Also even if it did support DTS my Blu-ray player does not have an optical out output and so it wouldn't work for that reason as well
As a home theater buff, I was concerned that it doesn't support true 5.1 sound (Dolby Digital, DTS, etc.), not to mention the Bluray sound options (Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio).
However, it is very sad that they chose not to support DTS and DDP for movies.
However Sonos doesn't support DTS which is the audio on pretty much every Blu-Ray
Most all T.V.'s can only output a PCM(digitally processed) audio signal, which basically means you're losing a good bit of quality
Also, the PlayBar can get a bit congested and harsh when pushed to higher sound levels, though this is definitely better if you add the Sonos sub
The opening battle of GLADIATOR was missing just a little bit without the rear speakers.
Set UpThe set up complexity is a bit greater than past models, for a number of salient reasons, first and foremost is the mounting of the speaker, should you choose to do so under your screen.
First, the playbar box when delivered by UPS was beaten up quite a bit bringing up the agonizing thought that I was going to have to send it back through the system
The only thing I would make people aware of, is that you need to hard wire into your router or modem in order to set this up
Excellent sound quality, easy to setup, no wires, even an app for full control at your fingertips.
Easy setup, wiring and phone app
It isn't necessary to have the bar hard-wired, however, as you could add another speaker connected to ethernet later on.]The Sonos app is the only way to set up the bar
Note that the Sonos Bridge is a required component and needs to be hard-wired to the router, and the Playbar needs to be in wireless range of the router
your home network devices, (i.e. your PC(s), laptop(s), and handheld(s)), on which you installed the free SONOS app(s), and3
Loud noise suppression is great when playing video games late at night so you don't wind up annoying everyone as much
With the voice enhancement option you can actually understand what people are saying over the excessive background noise present during most modern TV programming.
Fortunately the sound from Sonos is nice and it has some other nice features like being able to amplify voice over music when watching TV or use the silent setting which keeps loud noise to a min when watching tv at night.
