I bought this for my husband for Christmas, it works great, the sound is clear, it rarely has static, and he loves it
Sound is clear, just not overly loud, no matter how high the volume is set
The sound was never clear and I'm about to decide this thing"s a piece of cheap junk.
I'm using the scan sets in conjunction with the scan lists to tailor different scanning objectsThe unit is very configurable on its own without the EZ-Scan softwareGood interface in the scanner to quickly get up and running by zip code, county or cityThe unit is really high quality - good sound, easy to read buttons and great case for protection
Good features for weather also especially when weather conditions detonate.
Probably the best feature of this scanner is its Virtual Scanner memory.
I was able to program it right out of the box via the build in SD card databases, as well as get the windows software installed and configured with ease
Wish I knew more about using scanners but it works as it should as far as I know.
I like the programmable LED lights, but have noticed the battery runs down faster when not plugged in.
I love the tones and led light that can be programmed to faverite frequensies
This makes the display unreadable unless in very bright light, so most of the time I have no way of telling what units I am listening to unless I pick the unit up and hold it up to the light
You could program the LED light to light or strobe for police / fire/ medical etc

Functionally it seems fine, but the build quality for a $200+ item is marginal.
The Whistler WS 1040 digital scanner is of very good quality, and is simple to manually program

, After getting used to the radio it gets easier, the antenna that comes with it isn't the best for 800 mhz, a radioshack 800 mhz rubber duck type is better, or an outdoor discone on the roof works well for more distant stations, local vhf on outdoor
I have tried just about every tweak/fix available but nothing worked.
Love the scanner works like a charm and listen to it all the time and was delivered very fast service.
When the TRX-1 worked it's best, it was still mostly unintelligible.
My background: Licenensed amateur radio operator for 22 years, electronics/computer savvy, work in the RF/Telecommunications field and have messed with radios and scanners for as long as I can remember
The case, although nice, is not very durable, do I felt the need to add a $30 carry case from Radio Shack just to make sure the nice case doesn't get cracked
First problem I had was removing the case to install batteries
- Have to remove protective rubber case to access batteries and SD card.
Between needing to swap batteries and pulling the SD card, you'll come to hate and avoid the rubber protective case
It is not at all easy to remove that protective rubber case and put it back on
I opted for the top of the line Uniden (Regency died a slow death long ago).
A Lot of People are saying that The Scanning Hobby is Dying a Slow Death, Mainly Due To Many Cities Encrypting their Public Safety Transmissions.

For a $450 radio, i'd expect a sturdier belt clip, not cheap plastic covered by some metal.
The ugly: - Tiny, low contrast, black and white display, with lots of cryptic symbols. - Protective rubber case with aesthetics of a brick. - Useless ugly plastic inserts to rubber case
Wish I knew more about using scanners but it works as it should as far as I know.
the plastic seems somewhat cheap, and the programming is vague, and online support website is poorly designed.
Has a hard ,slick plastic ,and my requests to have it programmed the third time I send it back have been ignored
I’ve read so much about how difficult this scanner is to program, I almost didn’t buy it
Wish I knew more about using scanners but it works as it should as far as I know.

The program said it formatted and copied all the data files over, but the scanner refused to boot from it
I've had this about a day and my initial impressions are:Pro - Very flexible programing.
It's too bad Whistler could not spend the money to do the software right instead of wasting it on junk
Whistler should replace all that unreadable bold/serif junk with a clear set of bitmap fonts in two sizes.- VFO/direct frequency input monitor mode.- Larger speaker

It looks like a brick, but it's not as ugly as the useless plastic inserts, particularly the puke green one
