Yaesu FT-857D Amateur Radio Transceiver - HF, VHF, UHF All-Mode 100W Remote Head Capability
The FT-857D, the world's smallest HF/VHF/UHF mobile transceiver, provides base station-type performance from an ultra-compact package that's ideal for mobile or external battery portable work. Wide frequency coverage, outstandig receiver performance,...
They do make a 2.9 kHz filter, which has superb audio for rag chews or nets, but would do nothing to tighten up the receiver against adjacent signals
I've worked with contacts on 40m SSB to identify ideal audio settings, and for my voice and mic use style (very close and loud), Mic gain @ 60 and processor @ 65-70 (and turned on) seems ideal.
I will compliment the audio on the radio

However, the benefits of the 857 are its design, e.g. rear fans, nice looking radio with front controls, etc.
However, the benefits of the 857 are simple things, like its design, e.g. dual fans, detachable front panel, nice looking radio with front controls, etc.
However, unless you're looking for the very specific capabilities I was looking for, you're going to love this

For example, to turn on a speech processor or noise blanker, you must go to the appropriate menu item, instead of pressing a dedicated front panel button.
The important menu items and selections are pretty intuitive

You will also probably want to drop another $600 on the improved filters, and high stability oscillator, which improves selectivity, and stability over stock
It also lacks a roofing filter
It's just that newer radios have improved filters, which is very nice with bad band conditions.
The digital filters are extremely effective on CW, and still fairly helpful on phone modes.

I have both good and bad things to comment about the radio, now that I have used it for a while
Only thing to watch out for is premature partial failures of the LCD screen, particularly when used mobile and exposed to vibration/temp swings
Extra knobs and buttons are a good thing

Being so small, and doing every band from 70 cm up to the top 160 meter technical challenge DX band, you will have some compromises, like poor sound, lots of heat, and a small display to read
But for SSB use, 5 watts is difficult a whole lot of the time.
So, I've spent a lot of time complaining about some disappointing features on a truly fantastic radio.
