The volume control, sound quality, display and compact size are all excellent features
However this Bearcat came with a programming cable and free programming software is available from Uniden, Sure it's missing the 800MHZ band, trunking and stores fewer channels, but for the price this thing can't be beat, sensitivity is on par with the GRE and volume and sound quality is ALMOST as good, however this Uniden is less than half the size, and much, much lighter, yet feels a tad more solid
It's sturdy, with a surprisingly good sound quality & clarity for its compact size

Programming is a bit lengthy and uses scrolling via the volume control knob which was new to me.
This unit is fine for monitoring what I am looking to use it for (Analog Civil/Military Air Traffic), but I would not buy it for monitoring LEO/Police frequencies, as most are using Digital in the 800-900 mhz range
Programming was relatively easy using a windows computer
Reprogramming for local desired frequencies was easy using my laptop

Beware dedicated "race scanners", overpriced for the features included and often difficult to program yourself, forcing you to purchase frequency downloads at tracks.
The programmable feature and local hits are the best features I've found.
Other than those issues that may be my own, this scanner really does have a ton of awesome features.
My desktop uniden bc355n finds unknown frequencies better but lacks the great features this has

Be sure to install the current USB drivers from the Uniden website before attempting to update the firmware or use the free Uniden programming software
The FREE programming software also makes this a great value
As clunky as my programming hints are they are more clear than the manual.

It's not missing anything, if you don't like the range simply disconnect the antenna and attach a lager one, but obviously that hinders its mobility a bit

I'm going to chalk this up to a totally defective unit, but I'm not going through all that again to give it another try
Other than that, it is a really nice little unit that for $125.00, is well worth the money
The unit is difficult to figure out, software is hard to find to program with PC and there is an added cost if you want it programmed
Other that that, the unit is very sensitive and works well for my needs.
However, if you intend to use it with headphones or earphones, forget it - the unit produces an irritating click whenever the internal audio amplifier turns on or off (i.e. at the start and end of each received radio transmission) and it gets annoying very quickly
