The phone works except you can't see anything on the display which makes it impossible to dial a number in the directory or see info on an incoming call or use the phone for anything requiring a visible display

My only suggestion would be to turn off the Smart Call Block feature when first installing the phone because it may block ALL of your incoming phone calls.
When you turn on the "smart call block" feature, on the first ring, the phone will ask the caller to push # sign to continue
My old phones needed all of their batteries replaced (again), so I checked out new phones and found the smart call blocking feature with this phone.

If a caller does get through and begins their script to sell you something, you simply press the "Call Block" key on the handset and the call is ended and that phone number is placed into the "Blocked" list
If the phone number is not in your Directory, Allow List, or Star List, the Call Blocker tells the caller to say their name and press the # pound key
Those whose numbers are unlisted are answered with "This phone number does not accept this type of calls.
If not on these lists, the caller will hear a message similar to: "This phone number is using a call blocker, to ring through, at the beep, state your name and press the # key".
Block calls that do not display a phone number, and send any calls from numbers not saved in the Directory, Allow list, or Star name list to the answering system.
