It does grap tightly, but just didn't work for the vent design I have
I suspect the whole vent mount design is suspect, I don't have a CD player, and I already have a good dash mount (albeit one that's tricky to use in my car)
This works exactly as designed and is a very handy accessory to have
Phone slips out, flimsy design, constantly have to retighten, would not buy again or recommend.
So while I love the overall design, I sure wish some key bits (like the vent vice) were a mix of metal and plastic/rubber.

This phone and case are a bit bulky with a curved back, so it's not easy to grab onto, but this vent mount works fine
I have tried many different vent phone holders and this is the best one I have ever used, it fits in the vent good and with the lock they use it makes it stay
Overall, it's nice, but not if you have a larger smart phone, it will bounce off of the vent.
It works fairly well on smaller smart phones, under 5", above 5" and it has trouble holding the phone and staying in the vent.
With this product, once mounted to the vent, I can easily secure my phone into the mount with one hand.

I own two of them now and have found them to be the most convenient among the vent mounted phone holders I have tried

This holder will not stay attached to air vent with iphone 7
I used this in a 2008 Grand Cherokee with my iPhone X and even though the air vents are fairly robust, the clip just doesn't feel as sturdy as other mounts
It comes loose from time to time and falls out of the air vent.
