GMRS has further ranges operating at 5 watt but requires a license (good for 5 years and immediate family members).Overall: Nothing about the radios are dissatisfying or disappointing, unfortunately they are 3x the price of the clones, but worry free
Great price, easy to use, good to have for end of the world preparation (and other situations).
These radios work very well, are well made, get good signal and the price for
These radios have very good range at an affordable price.

All sounds can be disabled, including the power-on beeps.- DCS or CTCSS tones can be used to reduce interference.- Radios really snap into the charging base
Not sure about 30 miles, certainly not with obstacles between them, but the sound within 5 miles was loud and clear.
The sound is good and I like the range you can get with these
Decent range, good volume, clear sound, great price for 3
Reception is superior and the sound is crystal crystal clear

The battery pack on one of the radios has failed to hold a charge so we had to switch to alternate batteries for that unit since the cost for a replacement battery pack was too expensive.
ALL SALES are final, if you break the seal to inspect the product, you are stuck with it even if it does not work as it says it does
They work as they are suppose to but rechargeable batt SUCK
The radio reception was as clear as if we were standing next to each other.
It they shut off banging them on my leg would turn them on again but important communications was lost as we had no warning the radios were off.

We lost clarity and contact when only a mile or two apart.
Bought in hopes our grand girls could use it in our large yard for fun as well as for adults while hiking, fishing, hunting, etc.
The charger base sockets have little spring clips in them that mate with grooves on the base of the WT, so they seat in the base with a nice "snap," to maintain solid contact with the charging terminals.
We tested them at Mt Sunapee this weekend and contact between the peak and base was solid.
and we noticed you couldn't be more than a mile apart or you would lose contact .

But that is what they deem "optimal conditions".People should do a little research on how things work in the real world, before they bash something that they don't know about.
I wish people did a little research before they bash things that are mostly operator error.
But most people aren't working with these radios on the salt flats in Utah.
I like the privacy settings because we no longer get unknown people on our channel.
It's a shame the manufacturer lies about its range to rip people off

Finally, although it isn't reflected anywhere in Amazon's sales copy/photos, Midland's outer packaging includes a pretty clear disclaimer/graphic about the effect of line-of-sight obstructions on operating range, one that I think is accurate/fair:
or wherever there are lots of line of sight obstructions
Maximum range/No Sight Obstruction; Medium Range/Partial Obstruction to Line of Sight; Short Range/Major Obstruction to Line of Sight."
that is only achievable in the best conditions with no line-of-sight obstructions

These radios do not transmit/receive signals through 30 miles of dense forest
Good clarity and decent signal range in dense forest area
I have used these in dense forest, ski slopes with trees, and just plain open road use
