IK Multimedia iRig Pre microphone preamp for smartphones and tablets

iRig PRE is the ultimate solution for connecting any type of microphone - from regular stage microphones to expensive studio models - to any iPhone iPod touch or iPad providing access to the widest range of recording applications. iRig...
The iRig PRE seemed like a great product to be paired with a lavalier microphone and an iPod Touch to create a poor man's wireless mic setup for video shoots
Overall, the iRig Pre is solid and can be used with any stage mic such as a ShureSM-58, as well as any studio recording condenser mic of your choice
Purchased the Irig to simplify and improve remote radio broadcasts
Because of this low level output from the iRig Pre, it actually requires the use of an PC/phone to further boost the signal.
It's quiet (surprisingly less than -50db), has an excellent signal to noise ratio, and after Compression to bring up the levels in post, it still sounds great.
I purchased the iRIG PRE yesterday as I was looking for a better quality microphone signal input than my Samsung Tab 2 10.1 tablet.
When I recorded something at a non-clipping level with my AKG Perception 120, (not a fantastic mix, but certainly has soAunder better) what I get was a audio signal that had super high mid values

I got it, got a $60 mic, then downloaded the app and the recording is amazing
This claims it is for iPhone, iPad, and iPod, but watch out - that doesn't imply the 2 free apps it says are included will work on those devices, leaving you to try to find alternative apps to do the job.
my microphone will not work with this, and the paperwork says to download free vocalive app, but that app says it's for apple products only
The app works when it wants to, with the volume gear you can’t be precise with the volume you

I know that may defeat the purpose of having a compact and portable preamp solution but if you don’t need the portability the iRig2 is better and sounds better with an external pre
Modified it to work as a preamp for XLR mic for my video camera - google iRig PRE mod for details.
Captures cleaning sound and it is the best preamp available for anyone trying to work on a budget
The recording is clearer than using just the device itself
The gain meter on the side doesn't work consistently either, it's either too low or too high and has a lot of static or no sound recording at all
After increasing the gain almost +20db, the signal increased to a still less than acceptable level, and the noise floor increased to a massive enough degree it would render any recording very very poor
Now you can plug into the 3.5mm jack on your device and start recording awesome audio
It also comes with two free recording apps to get you started!
Those options might be more expensive, but won't sound like garbage.
But hey.. it's a GREAT GREAT GREAT option for DSLR film shooters on a budget that have good XLR mics, and want to maybe lighten up their rig by leaving the Zoom recorder off and recording right into the camera
If you are not inclined to a little soldering, then this option is the best for this exact purpose, you'll want to look into a beach tech item for WAY more money
I first tried using the Blue Mikey, which I do happen to like, but I still needed more control and would have loved the option of using a compressor to tame the decibel levels of my high notes

I wanted to find a product that would allow me to connect either a dynamic or condenser mic into my iOS device.
When coupled with a decent mic, you get usable audio out of this box and the bonus of being able to monitor the sound
I did use 2 different sennheiser shot guns and an EV mic- 3 cables, so it is not the mic's fault
For an A/B comparison, I used just the built in microphone on my smartphone and recorded the same distance and level of voice, and my smartphone mic sounded loads better with way less noise
I hooked up the iRig PRE, attached my dynamic mic, and plugged in the audio cable to my Roland Cube 30X guitar amp
Perhaps it is a wiring issue, or just a limitation of the device, but it is just a minor annoyance
Just make sure when following his tutorial you don't use the wrong black wire
Then I decided that maybe a wire was just loose, and so, while debating about sending it
