For streaming, I use my smart TV, but if I didn’t have that, I would be using the Sony player because it can decode HDR10

Moving on to the Panasonic, I had three incentives: (1) hoped-for higher reliability, (2) Dolby Vision, and (3) niche-of-niches, its current exclusive on being able to play 4K content from the Berlin Philharmonic’s Digital Concert Hall (The latter promises to make their 4K-enabled version available on other manufacturers’ Blu-ray players and smart TVs eventually, but at the time of this writing, it was available only on current Panasonic products.)My review, therefore, is based primarily on how much of an improvement the Panasonic is over my Sony, and this is an important comparison because the Panasonic costs more than twice as much as the current competing Sony model

The only reason I gave it 2 stars instead of one is because it actually does support 4k pictures when it works

My DVD's look enough like Blu-Ray that I almost don't want to pay the extra buck to rent BD's at Redbox

It will not play some disk formats it promised to play (I did not find a DVD-A it can recognize, and since my 12-year old Philips, $70 dollars originally, is nearly melted after a decade in a detached garage on our South, I can home-check my car disks only in computers).A bigger annoyance that because of a software problems the player will gradually slowdown, depending of streaming formats, sometimes after an hour or many hours (accumulated even during weeks if not used), becoming unusable
can"t read the disk that I may need to clean the disk, and I've tried several disk/movies even after running a video disk cleaner it still wont read!!

For those of you who are only interested in the bottom line, I'll cut to the chase: this player produces a great picture and sound and will play almost anything (including SACDs), even 4K Blu-rays that my other player chokes on; and the price is amazingly affordable

it could not handle the kind of wear that was common on rental discs; for all its flaws the Sony has had no problem with this and was able to play a recent rental (the surface of which appeared to be flawless) that the Panasonic was choking on
I regret to say that both the Sony and the Panasonic have significant flaws, but at this point it appears that the Sony is the lesser of two evils
Sony is unhelpful and unresponsive to the issue.
I bought this with excitement and am a loyal Sony customer when it comes to a lot of their products.
Sony should be ashamed of themselves for not at least acknowledging this problem.
