Blue Icicle XLR to USB Mic Converter/Mic Preamp
Product description
Why should you bother with a bulky interface, when all you want to do is plug a single microphone into your computer? With a Blue Icicle in your arsenal, you can turn any microphone into a totally streamlined, USB-ready recording ...
It works as it says and is thin and I can just keep it connected to my XLR cord and have them hang freely from my mic stand so that it doesn't get moved around, which can damage PP units easily
The Icicle is an excellent product, works as advertised
If you route your mic through a preamp, then put the Icicle between the preamp and the USB input of your computer, you can get a decent record level, but that extra equipment is what this light weight gadget is supposed to avoid
The level from this unit was hard to adjust, and when all was said and done, it was very low.
No mic preamp, no phantom power, no EQ, and I get a good clean clear sound level near the peak of input level
The Icicles inability to provide a usable sound level has hindered itsusability by a number of customers; Thus the assertion that we are dealing with a defective product
As long as the recording environment is quiet, the volume of a recorded track can easily be increased in you software without raising the noise floor to an unacceptable level
Quality is great, phantom power works, it's really wonderful!
Piece o' garbage.
For windows 7 users install can be a pain, but the trick pointed to elsewhere (not searching for drivers) worked great.
However, that is not really an issue because the product works great
Your mic should now be showing up under “Control Panel/Hardware and Sound/Sound” in the recording tab as “USB Audio Device”In a followup email, the support tech added: "Yes, there’s some glitch in Windows 7 specifically that causes the Icicle sometimes to be recognized as a multi-channel device instead of a single channel device, and that causes the firmware to malfunction because it’s looking for more than one channel of audio for some reason."Anyhow, after using the little pre-amp knob to boost the input, the microphone has worked great.
Got this little thing after weeks and weeks of setbacks and it worked from the start
But anyways, this thing worked effortlessly when I hooked it up to my Shure which had that weird 3 prong thing, but everything worked, and it sounded very clean.

I just bought this item today and was excited to finally be able to record with my new microphone but to my disappointment this thing is garbage I get an awful static and

I handle the device the same way I would handle an expensive microphone
For any blue microphone and some others this is perfect, but for some super powerful microphones they will just blow it out and you would be better out paying 150$ for a preamp of focuserite
Introduces noise and makes the microphone sound overly harsh
It works great for me, I have a blue Bluebird microphone hooked up to it, and it does not make my expensive microphone sound crappy.
The customer service department blames dynamic microphones or customers for not being loud enough
The recording quality was okay, albeit a bit noisy, for higher-pitched instruments
yeah, the icicle would be a great purchase, but if you dont want to spend a ton of time in post and want a clear recording i would suggest spending just a little more and going for an actual audio interface.
The recordings are crisp and clear, just as good as recording on my camcorder in PCM
If you need a quick, cheap device for simple, lo-fi recordings, this would be it - but you're wasting your money if you think you can get a good quality recording from this toy.
The used one they sent me always had a whine when recording

You are reading snippets from reviews of Blue Icicle XLR to USB Mic Converter/Mic Preamp
It's made from a cheap plastic casing that makes it feel like a children's toy or that it could fall apart merely by not handling it like an ancient treasure.
Con: I dislike the plastic casing and plastic gain knob because they feel cheap.
Works as it should.
It works as it says and is thin and I can just keep it connected to my XLR cord and have them hang freely from my mic stand so that it doesn't get moved around, which can damage PP units easily
The flimsy plastic case, poorly responsive gain knob, and gaudy lighting do not inspire confidence
I noticed no noise or coloration of the signal and it worked without a problem.
I suggest everyone buy I super long cable cause it catches loud noise if the cable moves just slightly
I have been using a standard XLR to USB cable with my Shure 58 dynamic mic, which works okay, except for an annoying hissing noise that accompanies the majority of my vocal recordings.
There have been many people that have had this same problem, but there was a noticeable hissing noise coming through
I turned the gain all the way up and there was no static noise at all, just my clear voice came through
(It is made of a flimsy plastic and is light as a feather - feels cheap).
My only issue is that the device would be better if they made it with a more durable plastic
When I was using it, I didn't have any issues, but I was always scared to use it because it's made of cheap plastic and everything felt flimsy
It works as it says and is thin and I can just keep it connected to my XLR cord and have them hang freely from my mic stand so that it doesn't get moved around, which can damage PP units easily
Let's get this out of the way, first: Yes the case is made of thin flimsy plastic, and it doesn't look like it can handle drops to the floor
