All I need to say is that this is the Premier Blu-Ray Player
This is the best Blu-Ray player I have ever seen, and at the price, how could I pass it up.
I have to say that this player is by far and many, many light years ahead the BEST DAMN BLU-RAY
I have not done a comparison between the Oppo and other Blu-ray players, but the Oppo is considered one of the best at upscaling because of its Anchor Bay ABT-2010 chip, which are usually found in much more expensive Blu-ray players and other high-end AV equipment.
This unit is clearly the best blu-ray player I have ever owned.
In fact, as good as my Denon is (perhaps their far more expensive DVD players sound better), disks sound noticeably better on the OPPO
Audio/Video quality: I have been avoiding Blu-ray for a while now because I had such a great upscaling DVD player
= blu-ray player + good dvd upscaling + sacd(+dvd audio)with good sound quality
The Oppo replaces what was a stunning DVD player-- a Marantz DV7600-- that I managed to pick up last year for considerably less than its release price of $1100.00.
Don't allow this type of advertising to ruin a great product.
The commercial success of the Oppo BDP-83 is testiment to it, and proves there is a wide-open field out there for a company to blow away the competition in the A/V equipment space with quality products and dedication to customer satisfaction, rather than just churning through the product cycle with mediocre products with a couple new features and generally poor service
Once again Amazon provides great products with prompt delivery.
Don't allow this type of advertising to ruin a great product.
This is a great product and, while it is not cheap, it is also a great value.
With Oppo's track record of providing superior products at an affordable price, I don't expect anything but great times with this player for a long way down the road.
I would like to start this review by stating that I think Amazon.com is a great company that offers great products at a fair price
The addional price to improve just the audio portion sounds a little steep
Considering its modest price, I believe one would have to spend a great deal more money to find a superior Blu-Ray player.
a very reasonable price- [...]- and they were incorporating the player into their high-end A/V components.
It can also be used as an aid for setting picture control adjustments for Detail Enhancement, Edge Enhancement, Noise Reduction, Brightness, Contrast, Hue (analog only), Color Saturation, Y/C Delay and Border Level
Excellent Blu-Ray performance, with equally good performance of non-Blu-Ray media.
but you can get one from Amazon now for about $270.In any case, I now have great BD performance and features with the LG 390 and uncomparable SD DVD upscaling with the Oppo 983.
Poor support, lack-luster performance and the end of HD DVDs left me wanting something "better"
This unit offers great performance for DVD and Blu-Ray and plays all of my SACD and DVD-Audio discs.
Slow picture refresh rates for DVDs in fast-forward and reverse modes.
BluRay gets you not only excellent picture but the great new sound format.
It was very easy to setup and the picture and sound is marvelous.
Excellent picture and sound quality(both blu-ray and DVD).
It can also be used as an aid for setting picture control adjustments for Detail Enhancement, Edge Enhancement, Noise Reduction, Brightness, Contrast, Hue (analog only), Color Saturation, Y/C Delay and Border Level
I waffled on purchasing the player due to it being double in price as some of the other players, and even though it lacks some features like netflix, wifi, etc, I am glad I bought this one.
Faster than the previous one (Panasonic) coming on and going off, has great features the Panasonic did not have (the Panasonic started flashing big lights distorting the video) and can be upgraded as new items become available
I thought today's most important feature in blu-ray player must be dvd upscaling
If I had to make one gripe, I do miss the "instant replay" feature of my prior DVD players
The only CON is that some of the deck's features are unable to be controlled by my Harmony One universal remote
It can also be used as an aid for setting picture control adjustments for Detail Enhancement, Edge Enhancement, Noise Reduction, Brightness, Contrast, Hue (analog only), Color Saturation, Y/C Delay and Border Level
Now that really gave me the feeling that their customer support is responsive to issues
Big problem with this blue-Ray player is it freezes while its playing the Blue Ray DVD,s
Where documentation was lacking, customer support provided the missing information

A MILE, I mean it looks, feels, and operates as a more expensive unit
For each DVD I tested, the fast-forward and reverse modes were so slow, they were useless!!!According to Oppo, this is a limitation of the player; it's not just a defective unit
SACD is an amazing format and this unit does SACD extremely well
The unit is vented and dissipates heat well, and most importantly...the LOAD TIMES ARE INCREDIBLE
Well that second unit has been flawless both in performance and the peace of mind that comes to me every time I use it knowing Oppo has my back
Supposedly, you can burn an MKV video to a DVD as data and play it that way
The HD format looks incredible (needless to say that you will need a HD TV)and the regular DVDs look almost as good as well.
The picture that it produces when it's hooked up to a really good, bigger TV is just plain sick ... so sick that it's addictive!!!By definition, movies rendered at 1080/24p on Blu-Ray are immersive
Just be aware that the player, while unparalleled when it works as it should, is not immune from bizarre and distracting glitches that may piss you off.
The previous rave reviews here as well as in print have pretty much said it all about this great player
My only issue was the lack of quality audio using the 7.1 analog connections
I have all my home theater devices connected to a network switch, so the lack of wireless is not an issue for me.

My only complain, only nitpicking is lack of streaming features.

My only issue was the lack of quality audio using the 7.1 analog connections
The only issue that I have with this player is the inability to turn off the region code locking when you play back DVDs.
Upon the advent of the Blu-ray format I purchased the Sony BDP-S500 Blu-ray player and was disappointed with it's painfully slow load time as well as software compatability issues I encountered when upgrading to a new high definition TV
Big problem with this blue-Ray player is it freezes while its playing the Blue Ray DVD,s
, the Oppo clearly showed a well defined computer generated animal whereas the PS3 was unable to generate the image to such a degree.
Well i am not going to tell you that it blew the PS3 away cause it didn't
