Reviews around value (5.00 of 5)

  • I feel the BDP-S550 represents a good value in todays market and would recommend it to my friends.
  • Initially, the player stretched the 4x3 DVD to fit my 16x9 screen, but I eventually found the Screen Format video settings, which when set to the non-intuitive value of "Fixed Aspect Ratio", displays all DVDs in their proper aspect ratio
  • This is an excellent player and a fantastic value at these prices.
  • Until then, I've got all the other channels set to -10 to -12dB with the subwoofer set to 0dB, which is almost close to the correct value for my home theatre

Reviews around product (4.71 of 5)

  • This is an inferior quality product, backed with inferior service and an attitude of 'we don't care about the customer's satisfaction'.
  • Very good product overall, a bit slow on start up but tolerable
  • We received this product on time, work very good, for me the best DVD blu-ray player.
  • I believe Sony is on top again, this product won the current format war
  • Just wanted to thank Amazon for the great products that they sell; the Blu-Ray player is a excellent piece of equipment

  • BEAUTIFUL picture and enhances old dvd's too of course not to "blue ray"
  • I tried other Blu-ray discs that I had along with other standard DVD titles and nothing works.
  • (My crappy DVD player from the '90s had position memory.

Reviews around ray (4.40 of 5)

  • It's a little slow at loading movies compared to the much faster and way cheaper blu-ray players on the market today
  • This is a fantastic Blu-ray player straight out of the box - no firmware upgrade required.
  • If want a reasonable inexpensive Blu-ray player that can handle all your options now or in the short-term future, the Sony BDP-S550 is the one to get!
  • We received this product on time, work very good, for me the best DVD blu-ray player.

Reviews around price (4.37 of 5)

  • Amazon had the greatest price on this superb blue ray player.
  • I didn't even ready the quick start; and the price was unbelievable as bundled with a z-series LCD
  • And like almost always, Amazon had the best price, and delivery just two days after ordering.
  • Amazon has it for a great price, and overall a significantly better player than the first gen devices (BDP-S300 and BDP-S500).
  • Amazon.com offered the best price and with free shipping I was sold.

Reviews around video (4.10 of 5)

  • The video is clean, but lacks the depth.
  • I burned the SD format video on a DVD and played it on a dvd player, it was fine, good quality
  • The menu is easy to navigate and it gives brilliant video and audio
  • Video is great, as is the audio, but the output volume levels are a bit on the low side
  • It does what it is suppose to do--provide beautiful video for HD LCDs--exposing Hollywood cinematography at its best.

Reviews around quality (3.95 of 5)

  • Only used it a couple of times and the quality is the best and ease of use was great too.
  • I burned the SD format video on a DVD and played it on a dvd player, it was fine, good quality
  • Top of the line!Cons: Sound quality is not what its all cracked up to be, but still good
  • This is an inferior quality product, backed with inferior service and an attitude of 'we don't care about the customer's satisfaction'.
  • In my view, the quality of standard DVD on my monitor is so good that going to Blueray is not worth the price.

Reviews around movie (3.95 of 5)

  • In particular the way it enhances older movies re-released on the format (e.g. Sleeping Beauty was amazingly clear and colorful).
  • I enjoy the movies I watch on the player, because I watch them in my bedroom in peace, Thanks again and go Blu-Ray.
  • Many movies have lock ups and audio sync issues, and it seems like most BD Live new blu ray releases require a firmware update and Samsung is not all that quick to issue updates.
  • However, since movies will eventually only be available in this format, consumers will eventually be forced to go with it
  • The picture looked a bit sharper and alot brighter, and its a dark movie.

Reviews around sony (3.38 of 5)

  • I'm incredibly impressed with this player, which I've connected to a 1080p capable Sony television
  • Sony provides zero support or parts availability but was all i could afford to be able to get audio from Blu-ray discs into my stereo.
  • In summary, Sony entices you to get a tool from its website with instructions on how to use it.
  • SONY has a firmware problem and rather than do the right thing and take care of their customers, they say that they MAY considering future upgrades to resolve the issue, but won't gaurantee
  • Sony refuses to send me a USB drive and states that I must obtain my own.

Reviews around problem (1.54 of 5)

  • I was refused all help!Sony claimed that my player was out of warranty; therefore it had no responsibility to fix it!Now, Sony's firmware update instructions say NOTHING AT ALL, NO WARNING, about ensuring that the player is still under warranty before attempting to install the firmware update, in case a problem might occur!
  • We are delighted with this product, (Sona BDP S550 1080 p).
  • What drags this down a star is its problems and little "quirks".The load speed.
  • This problem is nonexistent in the Panasonic DMP-BD55K.
  • I've done the whole disc doctor thing on this disc more than once, but it didn't correct the problem.

Reviews around motion (1.26 of 5)

  • Some people complaint that this player has no slow motion feature
  • Besides, the slow motion feature can be added with a firmware upgrade, I'm sure that at some point it will be added
  • In the meantime, I don't need slow motion, and I love my Sony S550
  • There does not seem to be a slow motion feature with this unit
  • i an not pleased because i was told it had slow motion which it does not

  • I am using it in 5.1 mode and have watched Dark Knight, Spiderman III, Transformers, and Hellboy II on it - as well
  • I have watched Iron-Man and the Dark Knight and both looked and sounded great
  • Should only be better with 1080.Also after Dark Knight we watched an ep of Rescue Me,and I was pleasently surprised that the upscaling was better,to me,then the Sony upscaling dvd player we are using now
  • Watched Dark Knight and thought the picture was as good as I was getting on my HD channels

  • That's six times the picture data contained on DVDs, which are encoded at only 480p

  • The higher the bit rate, the more data that is processed, typically resulting in higher video quality
  • DVDs have a maximum video bit rate of about 10 megabits per second (Mbps)
  • In comparison, Blu-ray Disc is capable of video bitrates up to an incredible 40 Mbps
  • The bottom line, higher bit rates allow for the least amount of data compression for HD video that looks closest to the original video source
  • More Sound Dolby TrueHD internal decoding and bitstream output via HDMI for the Dolby TrueHD and dts-HD (Master Audio and High Resolution Audio) codes delivers studio quality audio designed specifically for high definition entertainment like Blu-ray Disc movies, with up to 7.1 channels of surround sound that is virtually indistinguishable from the original studio version

  • Compatible with the A/V receivers and home-theaters-in-a-box (HTIBs) of today and tomorrow
  • Dialogue normalization maintains the same volume level when you change to other Dolby Digital and Dolby TrueHD programming
  • Dynamic range control (Night mode) enables you to customize audio playback to reduce peak volume levels (no loud surprises) while experiencing all the details in the soundtrack, enabling late-night viewing of high-energy surround sound without disturbing others
  • Xross Media Bar Xross (pronounced Cross) is Sony's Technical-Emmy award-winning graphic user interface for Sony WEGA and BRAVIA televisions and PS3 and PSX game systems

  • BD-Live BD-Live is a Blu-ray feature that enables you to access  special content via an internet-connected Blu-ray player

  • With BD-Live, your Blu-ray disc is different every time you view it
  • Check out the latest previews,  download special scenes, exclusive features and ringtones, and participate in online communities or games
  • As BD-Live continues to grow and expand, even more features will become available, customizing features and content to your location or preferences
  • More Space Blu-ray Disc has 5x more storage capacity than DVD, which allows more content to fit on the disc

  • Bonus View lets you watch special features and commentary inline without leaving the movie
  • HDMI Features x.v Color RGB Color Range xvYCC Color Range Thanks to the adoption of a newly approved international color standard called xvYCC (an option in the HDMI v1.3 spec and which Sony participated in creating), the color space has been greatly expanded
  • All Sony XBR HDTVs support the xvYCC color profile (Extended YCC Colorimetry for Video Applications), or "x.v
  • color" for short
  • Standard RGB color space allows the display of a portion of the colors that are viewable to the human eye
  • The next generation "xvYCC" color space actually offers  an available range of colors that exceeds what human eyes can recognize
  • Next-generation "xvYCC" color space supports 1.8 times as many colors as existing HDTV signals Lets HDTVs display colors more accurately Enables displays with more natural and vivid colors Deep Color So, where x.v
  • color expands the available range of colors your HDTV can display, Deep Color increases the number of colors your HDTV can display within that range, for smoother transitions from color to color
  • Lets HDTVs and other displays go from millions of colors to billions of colors Eliminates on-screen color banding, for smooth tonal transitions and subtle gradations between colors Enables increased contrast ratio Can represent many times more shades of gray between black and white Connectivity As a leader in products with HDMI connectivity, Sony has created BRAVIA Sync to gobeyond simple audio and video transmission

  • With "One Touch Play," operations that took several steps have been reduced to one
