(IMO, unit sounds just fine with no EQ at all.)I got mine on sale for $199.00 a few months ago, but still think its $248.00 price (as I write this) is a good value.
Great value for the price point, solved a lot of my multi hdmi cable issues
I see the price went up since I bought it but still a good value
Best sound, best power and best of all ...best price and value in class for 5.1 AV Home Theatre Receiver on the market
And the sound is quite acceptable- excellent value for the money.
Plenty of versatile functionality, clear sound and easy setup.
It makes the setup and use of what is a very good receiver/amp a hassle
Setup was pretty easy and the receiver appeared to work pretty well
Figuring out the setup was hard but all that work on it's programming was well worth the time and frustration
i wish they had told me in the online manual on the fist setup page that you can use the units lcd screen for adjusting settings, instead of always referring to the hdmi on screen menu
The Self calibration was a nice feature and the multiple HDMI inputs allows for trouble free connection to my TV
Not only does the option not exist to disable this ""feature"", but an abundance of Sony support forum requests, from multiple users, for a firmware update or any assistance were met with silence from Sony
A little disappointed that there wasn't a composite input option, but again, the added features practically double the price.
The speaker calibration setup is a nice feature, not super necessary though
This is another great feature that has a caveat in practice.
Changing the volume while my laptop or computer is displaying through the receiver blanks the screen, turns it to 480p to display the obnoxious volume icon and the arbitrary volume number, then cuts all audio and video before restoring the screen and audio to their normal settings
On the receiver, if you go to options > settings > then select and turn on "control from HDMI."Depending on the remote you are using, configure the remote to issue volume up commands to the TV
Volume could be greater, but on the whole I can still crank this up and fill the living room with sound a plenty
While it does pass 4k through the HDMI in and out ports, whenever the on screen display (OSD) is accessed, (which includes every time the volume is changed) the display reverts to 480p, causing the screen to black out temporarily
Not as load as my Yamaha it replaced, The volume at 75 (highest) could be a little louder
My old Onkyo lost two channels and the HDMI pass through was starting to go.
one s and my Sharp 4K tv
The biggest PITA issue this has outside of some issues with true 4K pass-through mentioned in other reviews is that when you power up and select the input you want to hear it will for some unknown reason revert to the optical audio cable if that is hooked up and you will have to manually switch it back when you loose sound after the first 30 seconds of viewing
Comments and answers stated that this is 4K compliant and supported HDCP 2.2.It [u]DOES
this Sony has been reliable and took care of what the more expensive former Onkyo 7.1 channel had with more issues involving HDMI cabling between components
Other than quickly setting up surround, expect to spend some time fumbling around trying to figure out what is where
the Sub-woofer stopped working having a hard time with vendor responding
It wasted my time setting it up, debugging it and then returning it.
It absolutely cranks big time (again after I changed the auto volume setting) and before this I always felt I needed different speakers and have even tried a few sets of Klipsch speakers (center channel and mains) and it never improved my sound all that much
The only minor downside is the noise it makes turning on
If I have any complaints about it, its the loud electronic "thunk" noise when you turn it on and off but its nothing crazy.
In a call to Sony customer support, I was told that the humming was normal and could be expected, but they could not explain to me why Sony would engineer a product to make an irritating background noise when not in use.
I found a work around for my particular setup, as I too was rather frustrated after purchasing this product
Your display screen throws another error message at me with an annoying error noise
