I like the size and looks of this drive, it will work well with anything with a USB port, laptop or desktop, and comes with it's own ok backup software if you don't already have some.
Honestly I was expecting a huge hard drive but this size is perfect
While access to files is OK, trying to determine free space or size of a folder on the drive (right click > Properties) takes literally hours
So after doing some shopping, the WD 6TB was the best size for the money
If this is a frequent, common occurrence, the potential buyer should be told that the object may not do what s/he thinks it will do.
" - that's must be a joke, quality is the opposite of this product, the plastic enclosure is poor plastic quality, it will get scratch if you just try to remove dust or fingerprint from it
The quality has been fine so far, but my Windows computer would not boot up with the drive plugged in until I reformatted to NTFS (that's the
Excellent Quality Drive, Runs under Linux ext4 superior to other main brand, have used over 20 of the Mybook 8tb & 4tb for a research project im associated with and would not trust any other brand
The XBox came with a 1T hard drive, that after two years was filled to capacity (because the video games are HUGE)
excellent quality, original packaging, fast shipping to NYC

Extra storage for my Xbox One X. Highly recommended external drive built by the best manufacturers.
I hope it last cause 8T is alot of pics and home vidoes to lose although it's not close to being filled up yet.
Works fine as a backup drive, didn't work for what we bought it for, additional storage for a DVR
All that storage looks good on paper but since the drives don't get any bigger, cramming that much storage makes it very vulnerable to power surges, blackouts etc
I go and it records my entire life!In that space and time, I started questioning what was the point of my entire life if it was this easy to lose so much data that I had spent so much time and effort capturing and preserving and supposedly backing up
My Passport that died after 38 months - much to my disappointment - a drive that I used to store movies - which are now lost due to PCB failure (not mechanical) just sitting on my desktop and having never been dropped or transported, Sadly, WD PCB repair/replacement to recover data is not as straight forward as other drives
I kept the drive in a well-ventilated area and made sure that nothing could damage it, given that there was sensitive data on the drive
so far honestly I have had 2 SSDs go bad and lose my data and one spinning drive in 35 years of bit banging
When your computer fails to identify the external drive, you're basically done and need a replacement or must send it out to have a company professionally recover your data from the failed external hard drive
, My only gripe with this thing is the hassle involved in plugging in the power cord in addition to the USB connector, as well as the risk of losing the cables (since they are removable) but I haven't as of yet had the cables come out on their own at all
After trying for an hour to get the drive to mount on a number of computers, I finally determined that it came with a bad USB cable.
It just doesn't power up and I have made sure its not a cable issue or a USB hub connectivity issue
Reading speed around 150, noisy and hot(over 62°C).. but work fine
I have this connected to a XPS 8930 which also supports USB c on the mother board
If it also fails, I'll remove all stars from this review
But I took off 3 stars because the new case lacks an activity light, a omission I consider a fatal error.

So... since everything's working I would give it 5 stars... but the concerning noises and so
Giving this 2 stars because (1) it should work out of the box and (2) I burned hours of my time doing checks of the hard drive (thinking there was something physically wrong with it) before realizing it was the USB.
I tried several different methods to fix the bad sectors, but was unsuccessful.

Probably just a bad sector, but wasting 2.5 hours setting up an external HD and ending up with nothing is sad.....merry christmas and to all a good night....

Bought it in February 2017, loaded a about two Terabytes of info on it and then started having issues with bad sectors.
so not counting that (just an FYI if you get this and have an older box) , the only thing I wish it had is a freaking light in

I do not like crazy flashing lights all over the place, but the only way to determine if the thing is powered up is to see it in your system or pick it up and feel it.
The drives lacks a LED light so there is no way of telling whether it is operating/active.
Update: after two weeks of periodic backups as a Time Machine drive on my wife's iMac, one of the drives started going south...an unusually loud and constant vibrating noise from the motor -- seems to keep getting louder
Not much noise I could notice and so far so good after 1 month.
Significant noise during operation.
I hear very low hard drive noise but no fan noise at all (I think cooling is passive).
While it's running it does make an occasional rattling noise but is otherwise generally quiet
