I hope there is a more robust and reliable system out there.
Overall the system is good, we are able to access the files over internet connection even from Iphone.
For instance, these devices had known vulnerabilities for months, that left people's systems susceptible to hacking, but WD didn't notify owners, or publish any real information on the problem(s).Search for "wd my cloud vulnerability" for more info.
this is a great system especially for beginners that aren’t sure on how to set up an NAS or even those that
The cooling system is a total failure on the level of how Microsoft Surface Pro's failure was before they updated the firmware
Paranoid I will lose all of my kids photos and videos, so putting up the money for this was a tough decision, but glad I made it
The EX4100 had everything that I wanted for a good price point
Other then it PLEX server performance, it a great little NAS at a very good price
The device seems to run no hotter nor louder than my Synology devices, and is certainly priced more favorably, although the feature set of this is lacking in comparison.
Fair price, delivered on time, no problems so far.
Easy online setup I used a 3T toshiba hard drive I had laying around
Drives had issue staying in standby however and would spin up regularly for seemingly no reason, even after disabling most features and functionality, and with no other systems on the network powered on to even attempt accessing it
This review is entirely concerned with Active Directory, and advertised feature.
I am deducting 3 stars for their MyCloud feature (which I have disabled), and I wouldn't recommend enabling MyCloud feature if you store any sensitive or valuable data on the device
Well built Network Attached Storage array offers popular features, is designed for ease of use
You can limit the access to certain files to protect any sensitive information you have as well!
Just got this NAS to help me backup my photography as well as give me access to all my files on the drive while away.
You can revoke the file access using the iPhone App later
After that however, I was easily able to utilize the WD Red 4TB HDD (also a great product) and taking advice from previous reviewers, I also portforwarded for my device to ensure that access wouldn't be restricted in any way
Other than that, the WD's phone apps are well designed and easy to use, and allow seamless file access.
Difficult Web interface especially configuring user access and shares
Paranoid I will lose all of my kids photos and videos, so putting up the money for this was a tough decision, but glad I made it
Fast enough; Quiet enough*; Easy enough to use with a nice, user friendly interface - although descriptions of settings and features could be more clear.
Changing router to UPnP Off and then set manual port forward on the NAS to the same ports set on the router port forward interface solved this issue.
While I think the interface could use some work, it is quite functional.
Just got this NAS to help me backup my photography as well as give me access to all my files on the drive while away.
Trying to play any other file types (AVI etc) just produces the the message "Server Too Wimpy"
I have since ordered 6 more for various clients as well as for internal use
In fairness I get sporadic messages about not being unable to Sync certain files and that it would re-try shortly, so maybe it hangs in between
Second, WD has a known issue with this product that if drive bays 3 & 4 are empty you will receive very concerning error messages "Event title:Drive Failed" - this can stop your heart!
I'm an IT professional and this thing is perfect for my personal home network backup needs
Easy online setup I used a 3T toshiba hard drive I had laying around
The first thing to note about the WD offering is the variety of configurations in which it is available.
Another strange thing is that the factory reset button appears to only wipe out the Admin password, not usernames or other configuration, letting it be accessed by anyone (at the unit) with no p/w.
This thing will send even a computer geek screaming into the night.
Since the NAS wasn't working for me when I applied a static IP address, I've been running in the default DHCP mode which means that IP address can and will change from time to time.
I have since ordered 6 more for various clients as well as for internal use
The software for this thing is horrible, it keeps crashing on Windows 10 and took me two hours before my computer was able to finally map it as a network drive before it randomly disappeared again (even on a static IP address and also, the IP DIDN'T CHANGE, it stayed the same
Among the dynamic assigned internet addresses that are displayed, look for the physical (MAC) address of the My Cloud EX2; write down the corresponding Internet Address (ip address)(3
I tried a lot of other suggestions I found online including setting a static IP address etc

My Cloud NAS devices" for details.)I can't tell if this is incompetence on behalf of WD, or just lack of concern for my security, but either way, I am getting rid of this device.---------This is a great little NAS device -- flexible/configurable
I just don't appreciate the lack of clarity in the description concerning the NAS' capacity
WD also has a very good reputation for the quality of their hard drives, as well as for customer support.

Buy if you want to have overheating issues (fan wont start and have to manually force it via SSH)
In the two weeks I've been using the WD Diskless My Cloud EX2 Ultra, I have only heard the much quieter fan once when at high speed during initial setup
The MyCloud runs a bit warmer (44-46 degrees Centrigrade, versus 36-39 for the ReadyNAS), but its fan is much quieter
It ran very hot, and gave me warnings that the fan was not working
the computer that was allegedly syncing to it is very reliable and has not experienced any failures or I would have lost as much as a year's worth of original research

The other one is a 2TB Buffalo system, which works perfectly but I was running out of capacity
(After all - 4 bays with 2 TB HDD would be 8 TB with 6TB usable in a RAID 5 configuration.)
For those wondering, the 4TB model (the one I bought) is described as pre-configured to RAID 1, but does not specify it has two 2TB hard drives in it and not 4TB drives.
It's not a 4TB NAS, it's a 2TB NAS with two 2TB hard drives preconfigured to RAID 1.
I haven't spent much time focused on the software as backing up to a 16tb WD Duo (great device as well
Looks clean, hard drives install well, have phone and important documents on computer backing up to the hard drive
This is a NAS, so it can't be used as an external hard drive via USB
On the word, if you have two identical external hard drives connect to this box, you will see two similar additional drive on the network.
Only operated a year before it indicated hard drive failure...on both drives.
even connected a brand new 6tb external WD drive to this last week, and the software told me that the drive was defective, it wouldn't even see/support their own external drives, i did finally get a backup of the NAS, after 5 days to backup 2TB of data with all the crashes in the system, sure hope it backed up anyway, as the NAS is now disconnected and up on e--y it will go tomorrow.
Submitting a support ticket and logs with WD resulted in them claiming it is user error and my network is to blame even with well documented WD community articles from several users with the same issues
So far, we've had only a few minor issues, but...as typically the case...those could be traced back to user error (forgetting access creds)
I read a couple reviews that said crashed un-expectantly and assumed that it must have been user error
Copying files to and from the NAS is only about half as fast as copying between PCs, usually about 40MB/s on Windows's speed indicator

I tried a lot of other suggestions I found online including setting a static IP address etc
I changed the name (shortened it) and I use static IP addresses on all of my devices and computers which was very easy to set up and change with the NAS interface
Since the NAS wasn't working for me when I applied a static IP address, I've been running in the default DHCP mode which means that IP address can and will change from time to time.
it does not work if you do not have a static IP ( public that is
For those of you having this issue or thinking about buying it, all the solutions that are on the forums online, such as setting static ip and doing system restore, WILL NOT fix this issue
The only downside is the proprietary need for WD or Hitatchi brand hard drives
However, I was in a dire need to remove my myself from having to attach my external drive to my devices all the time
Using Windows 8.1 and trying a number of settings for file sharing, I found that the performance is not great but acceptable, however in many occurrences batch (more than one) file transfers or editing (for example tagging and rating images in photo gallery) will fail with at time the need to completely restart the windows machine and/or reboot the file server
